The seasons, they are a-changin’, and it seems like everyone’s enjoying a sniffly nose – if not the full shebang with Covid – at the moment. And while a turmeric tea can’t magic away all your problems, this one will certainly give it a red-hot go.
Some call it Turmeric tea or Mermaid Elixir, some call it Immuni-tea, some prefer Might-tea. Whatever you call it, this is a magic drink containing turmeric, ginger, lemon and honey which is enjoyed in our house every time we feel the slightest sniffle coming on. I swear it’s stopped more that one cold dead in its tracks.
Turmeric, of course, is a spice that’s been used in India for thousands of years, both for flavour and as a medicinal herb. It’s packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, has been shown to help with arthritis, anxiety and depression, and has an abundance of other benefits which you can check out here.
Ginger, of course, is an well-known anti-nausea and digestive aid, is high in antioxidants and has been used for thousands of years to treat colds, among many other ailments.
Add the lemon for a good whack of immune boosting Vitamin C and antibacterial properties, and honey, which has been shown to soothe sore throats and, of course, tastes delicious.
This drink does pack a punch, but I like it that way – add more water if it’s too intense. Also! Don’t strain it! Eat all the good ginger and turmeric bits that fall to the bottom – they’re not the best tasting but I reckon eating it makes all the difference.
Note: Turmeric stains everything. Benches, fingers, chopping boards. Be careful and take your cute white shirt off before making this, trust me!
Ingredients for Turmeric Tea
- 1 inch tumeric
- 1 inch ginger
- Raw honey
- juice from 1 lemon
Method
- Finely grate the ginger and turmeric. I use a Microplane – you want it really finely grated, not chunky.
- Add grated ginger, turmeric and lemon juice to a jar. This is your ‘tea’ brew and will last in the fridge for around a week, maybe more.
- When you’re ready to drink, spoon a teaspoon or two of the elixir mixture into your cup, along with a big teaspoon of honey. Add boiling water and leave to brew for a few minutes.
- Enjoy!
